A birthday party had been planned, and there was a party to be thrown at Paul Summers’ house. He hadn’t offered... Jocelyn had. And come to think of it, Paul hadn’t been very excited about it. But at least Paul could benefit from one thing. Paul Summers would not feel the slightest bit guilty about not buying his ex-wife anything for her fortieth birthday.
Yes - that’s right. Paul Summers had divorced a woman who had been ten years younger than him. Sharon Reynolds was anything but old. In previous years, she had taken some of the good money that Paul had made from work and had invested in some... “work” of her own.
Let’s see. Sharon had gotten Botox more that a few times and had gotten a nose job. She was that mom that liked to pile on the makeup, but none of the kids ever really noticed because to them, that is how she had looked forever.
Sharon had also planned on getting another treatment in the chest area, but due to the divorce, she had chosen to postpone it, and then... it ended up never taking place due to her financial problems.
Jocelyn had no interest in surgeries of this type, but at the same time, did not make her mother feel bad about them. I guess you could say that she was neutral.
Paul on the other hand had found them frivolous and petty. This had been why Sharon had originally wanted the breast enhancement. She had thought that it would broaden his opinion on the subject... but due to some of his other opinions about her, that enhancement never took place.
Paul could care less about the size of her chest or the shape of her nose. Yes. Mr. Summers had always been a simple man. He liked things natural and fresh... something that a certain Ms. Reynolds is not - at all.
But getting back to the birthday party...
... Jocelyn and Nadine had decided to plan the party on their own. Of course this idea might have been hinted just the tiniest bit from the person whom the party would be thrown for.
Because if Sharon Reynolds was anything, it would not be a moron. She knew what she wanted. But most of all, Sharon knew how to get what she wanted.
The entire point of the party was to spend more time with Jocelyn. Sharon had figured that if Jocelyn was to be planning a party for her, then they would be spending a lot more alone time together. With Nadine.
This had not come as a surprise to Ms. Reynolds. In fact, it had been quite expected. Sharon had always been fond of Nadine. Of course she didn’t favor Nadine over her own daughter, but especially when Jocelyn had been younger, Sharon found Nadine to be the least annoying out of Jocelyn’s friends.
There was just something about her. Maybe it was the fact that Nadine knew how to hold an adult conversation with the parent of a friend while not pissing off the friend... which can happen.
Party planning took place, and table cloths were purchased. All was finished except for the guest list.
Sharon had listed many of the friends that she had made in her new neighborhood... as she liked to call it.
None of Sharon’s old friends were added to the list, because - being the true friends that they are - they had decided to end their friendship with Sharon after she had moved out of the fine neighborhood that the Summers lived in, and into a trailer park.
But in addition to all of the females who were new friends of Sharon’s who had been added to the list, a certain male was added too.
At first, Paul Summers assumed that it was a man that Sharon had convinced into coming to try and make him jealous since she had heard the news of his new girlfriend... but he was completely wrong.
In fact, Sharon hadn’t actually wanted to invite Harold Sanders to her birthday, but after one of their nights together, Sharon had decided to try and actually spark some sort of conversation with the man who she had so intimately shared herself with - ever.
But Harold had threatened to tell Jocelyn about what Sharon had been doing if he was not invited. So, naturally, Sharon had to invite Harold Sanders, the man whom she was sleeping with, to her fortieth birthday party at her ex-husband’s home with her daughter and all of her other friends.
The party took place on a warm summer day. Not too hot. Not too humid. There were just that perfect amount of clouds in the sky. You know... enough to make the sky look like a painting, but not enough to cover the beautiful blue sky that was post card perfect.
The party took place in the back yard, because Sharon hadn’t wanted to see all of the furniture that had been moved around in the house which she used to be her home.
Jocelyn didn’t have to ask her mother about having the party in the back yard, because she just knew... there was something about her mother that didn’t like betrayal. Yes - I know. No one enjoys betrayal. But most people are able to deal with it. Sharon Reynolds was that woman who just couldn’t stand it. She just couldn’t.
This is why she was using the art of prostitution to see her daughter. Because she would rather allow others to violate her, than waste her life missing her daughter.
This trait is admirable. Inspiring even... but I think we can conclude that Jocelyn wouldn’t be very pleased about what her mother was willing to do to see her. For what mothers will do for their daughters...? No one can really explain that - except for a mother herself.
The tablecloths were black with red utensils and plates. The chair covers were a cream color, and the pool reflected the beauty of the sky, magnifying the magnificence of the day and how wonderfully the girls had planned the party.
Just a girl...
